Wednesday night Garth Brooks kicked off the first of nine shows at the Pepsi Center and what a kick-off it was. It's been almost two decades since he played Denver making these some of the most highly anticipated shows of the year for the Mile High City. The fans were standing even before Garth appeared as a giant timepeice began a countdown, but when he did... he turned a crowd of nearly 20,000 into a screaming, singing, arm-pumping mass. He completely locked in with the audience. What a beautiful sight to see!
Opening with "Man Against Machine" and immediately following with "Rodeo" set the tone for a terrific evening of solid entertainment. Never for one second did he lose momentum as he belted out "Two Of A Kind (Workin' on a Full House)", "The Beaches Of Cheyenne", and "The River". He had the fans clapping, singing and swaying along to every beat as he sang "Two Pina Coladas", "Papa Loves Mama" and "Ain't Going Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up)". Next up... "Unanswered Prayers" (one of my favorites) and it was a such a crowd pleaser that everyone was singing as loud as they can and with such feeling and emotion that even Garth noticed.
Putting every ounce of himself in his show he forged on with "That Summer". Immediately after we heard the sound of thunder and the roar of the audience was unstoppable. "The Thunder Rolls" was definitely a night highlight for everyone. Switching gears he went into his newest song "People Loving People".
Slowing it down he begins "In Anothers Eyes", the fans go crazy and even crazier as the beautiful Trisha Yearwood takes the stage and the duet began. Yearwood continues with "Prizefighter", "XXX's and OOO's (an American Girl) and brought the house down with her powerful pipes in "How Do I Live" and "She's In Love With A Boy"!
Before long Garth is back and gets the fans all riled up with "Shameless", "Callin' Baton Rouge" and "Much Too Young (to feel this Damn Old)".
Garth is possibly the only artist that can get everyone on their feet dancing to songs like "Friends In Low Places" and then have them swooning the very next minute to heartfelt songs like "The Dance". He is commanding and confident throughout his set and no matter what he is performing he has a magnetism that makes the audience love him.
Garth and the band delivered 100% on the money all night long. The music still sounded fresh, and the frequent smiles revealed that they still have a lot of fun playing it.
Garth Brooks is truly one of a kind. I'm drawn by his high energy, his mega talent and his great catalog of songs.
Music should make you feel. It should fill you with emotion and transport you to another place and time, and that my friends is exactly what Garth Brooks does.
